Individual Power

Individuals have many ways to influence society, though we are usually discouraged from taking any initiative.

voting

Voting is a way to show that politics matters. Though often the best an individual can do is cast a protest vote for a candidate who will not win, politicians do care about which way the wind is blowing.

educating ourselves

Taking responsibility for our own social, political, and environmental education is critical to oppose establishment abuses. The corporate news media in particular focuses people on fluff and promotes a passive acceptance of the world.

selective purchasing (boycotting)

Purchasing products and services based upon a company's ethical practices is powerful in opposing injustice. Avoiding corporations in general is usually helpful.

Sometimes the word "boycott" is avoided because of racist connotations during the Jim Crow era.

donating money

We have many opportunities to donate money to groups, from community groups to political campaigns. Careful investigation is needed, however. Many groups are far more establishment than they tell their donors. Even groups which are doing public service are often used by the establishment to given token support for important causes. Many groups, such as the Sierra Club, will oppose the establishment in some areas while embracing it in others. (The Sierra Club has repeatedly endorsed hawks.)

educating others

Helping others to understand the world and use their political power effectively is much of activism.

reporting abuses outside the establishment

Often reporting establishment abuses to activist groups or aggressive reporters is extremely powerful. Stories and photos of US torture have helped define the US "war on terror."

Note that there are many ways that the source of leaked information can be traced. E-mail should not be used. Many commercial copy machines actually mark copies, allowing tracking.

raising children

As George Lakoff points out, having and raising children is a great influence on society. (Children require time, money, and environmental resources of course.)

using political views in finding a spouse

Who we choose to marry affects how we can spend our time, use our time, and raise our children. Ideally our spouse or partner will promote our own activism.

Romance and politics do not always mix, and our political views evolve over time. Still, this is a way to influence the world. A spouse who wants a BMW is less valuable to the world than a spouse who wants to improve the community.

civil disobedience

Protesting by disobeying laws is a long-standing tactic in the US. This can generate news coverage and lets the establishment know they are not in control.

Vandalism is often used against activists, and violence usually just escalates establishment abuses. Care and thought are required so that civil disobedience is not just destruction, and serves the needs of society.

choosing an employer based upon ethics

Selecting an employer based upon ethics is one way to protest establishment abuses. This may be difficult or impractical for many, but is worth considering.

pressing officials publicly

There are often citizen forums for interacting with members of Congress or other government officials. Though the meetings may be organized to filter-out negative comments, they can be worth investigating. Government agencies often are required to have public hearings. (A common establishment tactic is to conduct as much business in private as possible. There are laws against this in some states.)

ethical investment

Choosing among different investment options based upon ethics of the investment companies applies pressure on the establishment to behave responsibly.

directly contacting government officials

Contacting government officials lets them know what the public wants. Faxes and phone calls are perhaps more valuable than e-mail and online comment forms.

Note that we should not take the polite letters received back from politicians seriously. They are often created with a formula meant to deter the meek. (The selfish are not shy about making demands on the government.)

pressing legal action

Some problems can be resolved in the courts. The courts tend to be pro-establishment, but may enforce the law against the establishment in some cases.

reporting abuses to the establishment

Formally reporting establishment abuses to the establishment in some cases forces change. Such reporting at least shows that some people are opposed to abuses. Long-term results are variable.
