US Activist Divisions

Some issues can divide activists in the United States. (The focus is of the list is on those working hardest to end the US occupation of Iraq.)

9/11 Conspiracy Theories

Some activists believe that the US government orchestrated the 9/11 attacks.

Those who believe this often are dedicated to proving 9/11 a conspiracy so that Americans are shocked into action and the government disgraced completely.

Most senior activists seem to consider it unlikely that the government encouraged the 9/11 attacks. There are real doubts about some of the official story, however.

The historical precedent for doubting the official 9/11 story is that Nazi's did evidently support the burning down of the German parliament building, the Reichstag.

best ideology for activism

Many activists are die-hard believers in a specific political theory. Communism, with many different sub-flavors, is a rallying cause for some.

Because much of activism is based upon abstract ideals, such as justice, it is not easy for activists to agree upon a belief framework. Most are united in the belief that the US national power is abusive, especially internationally.

hope in the Democratic Party

Most activists quickly become disillusioned with the Democratic Party. It doesn't take too much studying to find that high profile Democrats such as Feinstein and former Rep. Tom Lantos supported the US occupation of Iraq, and many activists feel that there is no difference between the two major parties.

There is often disagreement as to when to support Democratic Party candidates. Some activists push for a Democrat in the White House to increase the chance of moderates in the Supreme Court. Judges appointed by Republicans are most likely to reduce women's rights and civil rights in general.

view of Israel

Among activists as well the general public there are sometimes divisions on Israel. Most who oppose US aggression agree that Israel has a long history of abusing Palestinians. The depth and reasons for Israeli crimes divides people quickly, however. Many Jewish activists around the world see Israel as a necessary refuge in a racist world. Many just see everything done by Israel as motivated by wish to have an empire.

Sensitivity is best when talking with people about Israel.
