Full Metal Jacket

This is a cynical look at the Vietnam War by Stanley Kubrick. The harsh environment of boot camp stands out. (It may exaggerated, but at least parts of the boot camp experience are probably authentic.) Much of the language is crude, so it is not a film for children.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

A fictional depiction of Allied prisoners and Japanese camp staff in Java. It is shows distrust and racism as well as attempts at reconciliation by the soldiers on each side. The film emphasizes a lack of justice. Some sexual talk at the start is not suitable for children. It is often a heavy film.

Though the story seems unrealistic in places, the film is quite interesting. The characters often don't understand each other. Some VHS tape releases don't include subtitles so that the basic language confusion is emphasized.

Many people enjoy the music, which is available on CD. The actual film can be difficult to obtain.

Platoon

This was one of the most realistic depictions of the with respect to the details and attitudes of the US soldiers. The plot has somewhat excessive drama but Vietnam Veterans are impressed with the authenticity. The film is a criticism of the war.

The audio commentary on the DVD includes an officer who didn't like the war but seemed to have no moral qualms about the basic combat. (This former officer did object to crimes against people who were obviously non-threatening.)
