Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
A fictional depiction of Allied prisoners and Japanese camp
staff in Java. It is shows distrust and racism as well as attempts
at reconciliation by the soldiers on each side. The film
emphasizes a lack of justice. Some sexual talk at the start is
not suitable for children. It is often a heavy film.
Though the story seems unrealistic in places, the film is quite
interesting. The characters often don't understand each other.
Some VHS tape releases don't include subtitles so that the
basic language confusion is emphasized.
Many people enjoy the music, which is available on CD. The
actual film can be difficult to obtain.
