You Call This a Democracy?

This depicts the US as run by wealthy elite with most of the structures in society used against the population.

It has elements of Communist class struggle and conspiracy theories but social justice activists will probably agree with most of the views. It is well structured and fairly short.

Moral Politics

George Lakoff describes the power of frames, or emotional contexts, to drive decisions. In this book Lakoff focuses on how morality drives both conservative and progressive voters. Conservatives favor the "Strict Father Model" while progressives pursue the "Nurturing Parent" frame.

Lakoff argues that conservatives actively promote their model, and this is a key component of their political victories. Democratic Party officials, on the other hand, often modify their views based upon what voters want. Lakoff points out that this is doomed to failure.

Lakoff doesn't distinguish between when politicians believe in their model's morality and when they use it purely for manipulation. Lakoff also doesn't deal with facts as much as attitudes. This can make Lakoff frustrating to read, but Moral Politics is still a major publication on American beliefs.

Not everyone agrees with Lakoff, but his structure of moral decisions in politics and society is valuable to browse.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

This book describes how US government and corporate alliances dominate the world through manipulation and brutality. Perkins emphasizes pushing other governments to "invest" in projects managed by US corporations.

The style is a little informal as it is a biography rather than a structured look of US corporate actions.

The Culture Struggle

This is a description of class-war by Michael Parenti. It is Communist depiction of problems in the US. (Despite Parenti's background, the description of the US is still quite valuable. Class struggle is a powerful when making a model of how society functions.)
